Safety

For enhanced safety, the front and second-row seat shoulder belts of the Mercedes EQB have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Cadillac Lyriq doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

The EQB’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Lyriq doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The EQB’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Lyriq doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the EQB and the Lyriq have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available lane departure warning systems and around view monitors.

The EQB has a standard locking charge port which locks and unlocks with the power locks. The Lyriq doesn’t have a locking charge port. A locking charge port prevents tampering and damage.

Suspension and Handling

The EQB offers an optional driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The Lyriq’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The EQB’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The Lyriq doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

The EQB 350 4MATIC handles at .85 G’s, while the Lyriq pulls only .80 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the EQB’s turning circle is 1.3 feet tighter than the Lyriq’s (38.4 feet vs. 39.7 feet).

Chassis

The Mercedes EQB may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 900 to 950 pounds less than the Cadillac Lyriq.

The EQB is 1 foot shorter than the Lyriq, making the EQB easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The EQB is 5.6 inches narrower than the Lyriq, making the EQB easier to handle and maneuver in traffic.

Passenger Space

The EQB offers optional seating for 7 passengers; the Lyriq can only carry 5.

The EQB has 2.1 inches more front headroom and 1.6 inches more rear headroom than the Lyriq.

The front step up height for the EQB is 2.2 inches lower than the Lyriq (17” vs. 19.2”). The EQB’s rear step up height is 1.7 inches lower than the Lyriq’s (17.5” vs. 19.2”).

Cargo Capacity

The EQB’s cargo area provides more volume than the Lyriq.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the EQB. The Lyriq doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Servicing Ease

An ASSYST PLUS is standard on the EQB to save the owner time and money by calculating maintenance intervals based on odometer mileage. This takes the guesswork out of keeping your vehicle in top condition and helps it last longer. Cadillac doesn’t offer a maintenance reminder on the Lyriq.

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the Lyriq, the EQB has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, suspension setting, power steering assist, outside mirror angle, climate settings and radio stations and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The EQB offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Lyriq doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

If the windows are left open on the EQB the driver can close them all at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Lyriq can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The EQB’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Lyriq’s standard intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed, but can’t turn on and off or change speed based on changing rainfall.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the EQB to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Lyriq doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the EQB has a standard rear wiper. The Lyriq doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

Recommendations

The Mercedes EQB outsold the Cadillac Lyriq by 29% during 2023.
